Jerry “Buck” Nelson
La Ronge Churchill River Antler Carver
Jerry “Buck” Nelson was born in La Ronge and raised on the Churchill River “Missinnippi”(Cree name for Churchill River). Buck grew up in a traditional family setting learning all the education required to live a natural life with nature. Through hunting, trapping, fishing, gathering food and learning how to navigate the white waters of the Missinnippi is where Buck began his artistic career.
In this beautiful and serine environment Buck develop a artist view of life. The beauty of the natural environment and the difficulty of living a traditional life instilled in him an ability to create many fantastic works of art. Among his favorites art form is Carving antlers from Moose either from shed antlers or from Moose he has hunted.
Much of Buck’s artistic ability can be attributed to his mother Jean Nelson a well known artist and William Nelson his father who can make and create many beautiful wood carvings and crafts. In fact Buck’s whole family has an ability to create many art and crafts designs.
Buck is also an excellent woodsman and geophysics operator and is sought after for this knowledge by many exploration companies to do exploration work. Another major accomplishment that Buck can take pride in is his ability to build beautiful cabins which he learned from his father as well.
